An Appeal

In 1996 having identified the rehabilitation of challenged children of Kodagu District as the most neglected area, Kodagu Vidyalaya took it on itself to establish a centre for them. At that time this was the only centre of its kind in the district. Today there are 50 children receiving specialized therapies according to their individual needs, in the areas of speech , physiotherapy behavior modification and daily life skills. Each child is given some computer training as well as some exposure to spoken English. This also helps them to gain self confidence and self esteem. Besides imparting functional education the older children also undergo vocational training so that in due course of time they become self reliant and walk into the main fabric of society with a certain degree of self-confidence and dignity. Some students who are challenged only in Speech and Hearing, but coming from economically weak sections do not have access to specialized institutions, are being given formal education. More than ten such students have succeeded in passing the state SSLC exam and have moved on in life. Our students have been participating with a fair degree of success in Sports Competitions at the District, State, National and International Level. Students have regularly win medals at the National Level as also at Special Olympics held in Shanghai, Tokyo and Alaska and Australia. This year too one student has left for the United States to participate in the ongoing Special Olympics. One major problem facing us is rehabilitation , while the Government is making rules of reservation for the differently abled these seem to be more on paper rather than in implementation. For this reason, with the help of Coorg Foundations we have started a retail unit called “Nambikay”. This is to help generate employment for our older students, as well as funds for the school. Our special education and volunteers have been more than successful in creating an awareness in the minds of parents of these :Special Children” and others that a child may be ‘differently abled’ but can still live a near normal life with proper training and guidance. They also ensure that parents are informed and given adequate help to avail of scholarships or any other benefit schemes, started by the government for these students. This kind of multifaceted programme necessitates a large infrastructure with an enormous outlay of capital. However it is only fair that these children are also given a chance in life. You have been magnanimous in participating in our ‘partial sponsorship’ programme in the past. May we therefore request you to be kind enough to renew your sponsorship by making use of the tear –off slip and sending us Rs.5,000/- every year. If anyone is able to give a larger amount it would be most welcome. We also request you to keep in mind potential avenue of rehabilitation for our older students, some of whom are around 20 years old. They are not disabled but differently abled and have all developed certain skills.
